Stay informed about the call for changes to ensure a more practical and less burdensome schedule for all stakeholders.”

Accra, Ghana- Teacher Unions in Ghana, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH), and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), have jointly called for a reconsideration of the reporting and reopening dates for Senior High School (SHS) 1 students.
The letter, dated November 29, 2023, was signed by Thomas T. Musah (General Secretary, GNAT), Angel Carbonu (President, NAGRAT), King Ali Awudu (President, CCT-GH), and Mark Dankyira Korankye (General Secretary, TEWU).
In their communication, the unions expressed concern over challenges related to the close proximity of the placement, reporting, and reopening dates for SHS 1 students and staff.
The unions noted that the placement of first-year students into Senior High Schools was conducted on November 28, 2023, and the process is still ongoing.
However, the announced reporting date for these first-year students on December 4, 2023, is deemed impracticable due to the proximity of the placement and reopening dates.

Highlighting the issue further, the unions emphasized that requiring Form 1 students to report on December 4, 2023, only to go home again on December 21, 2023, for the Christmas break places an undue burden on students, staff, and parents.
The vacation period, spanning from December 21, 2023, to January 2, 2024, was considered too limited to offer meaningful rest to both teaching and non-teaching staff.

In light of these concerns, the Teacher Unions collectively called on the Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider the current situation and make adjustments to the dates.
The unions aim to ensure a more practical and less burdensome schedule for all stakeholders involved in the education system. Stay tuned for updates on the response from GES and any potential changes to the SHS 1 reporting and reopening dates.
