PRETAG and Stanbic Bank Ghana have concluded a comprehensive loan partnership offering teachers access to auto loans, personal loans, and housing-related financing at a reduced interest rate with flexible repayment terms.
The Pre-tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has concluded a landmark partnership agreement with Stanbic Bank Ghana, expanding access to affordable credit facilities for its members after nearly a year of negotiations.The details of the agreement were disclosed following a meeting between PRETAG leadership and the bank, with the rollout of the partnership expected to begin from Monday, subject to the completion of all documentation by Friday.

Expanded Loan Products for Members

Under the partnership, the existing auto loan scheme has been significantly broadened. In addition to financing for cars, motorbikes, and tricycles, members can now access:
  • Loans for building projects, including finishing and furnishing
  • Unsecured personal loans, offering greater flexibility for individual needs
 

Loan Duration and Interest Rate

The agreement provides for a maximum loan tenor of 72 months (6 years), with members having the discretion to choose a repayment duration that suits their financial capacity.
The interest rate is pegged to the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) minus one percentage point. With the current GRR at 15.68 percent, PRETAG members will access loans at 14.68 percent per annum.An insurance premium of 1.6 percent applies to the loan facility. Members with verifiable additional income may qualify for a higher affordability threshold.

  • Repayment method: Reducing balance
  • Top-up option: Available, subject to affordability assessment
  • Affordability basis: Net salary and verified income
The bank will also offer loan pay-offs for both ordinary members and union executives.


Salary Account Switching and Incentives

Stanbic Bank has further committed to facilitating the switching of salary accounts for PRETAG members with minimal stress. Members who operate salary accounts with Stanbic will benefit from additional incentives, details of which will be communicated during the rollout.
 

Flexible Procurement Options

Members may obtain quotations independently, after which the bank can:
  • Release funds directly to the member for procurement, or
  • Handle procurement on the member’s behalf
This applies to vehicles, building materials, and other approved loan purposes.


Practical Illustration of Affordability

As an illustration provided during the meeting, a member with:
  • Net salary: GHS 3,800
  • Affordability margin: GHS 900
may qualify for a loan amount of approximately GHS 92,000, with a monthly deduction of about GHS 1,832, calculated on a reducing balance basis.  

Possible Nationwide Sensitisation

Both PRETAG and Stanbic Bank are considering a joint roadshow to sensitise members across the country on the details, benefits, and application procedures of the partnership. 

A Year-Long Negotiation

Union officials disclosed that discussions leading to the agreement had spanned over one year, reflecting sustained engagement to secure improved financial terms for teachers.The partnership is expected to significantly improve financial access, asset acquisition, and personal investment opportunities for pre-tertiary teachers across Ghana.
