Accra Technical University (ATU) has officially reopened its refurbished campus gym, reaffirming its commitment to staff and student wellness through improved fitness facilities and structured exercise programs.


Accra Technical University (ATU) has officially reopened its refurbished campus gym, following the completion of renovation works aimed at improving access to fitness and wellness facilities for both staff and students.

The reopening ceremony took place on January 30, 2025, marking a renewed institutional focus on healthy living, physical fitness, and mental well-being within the university community.

 

Commitment to Wellness and Active Living

Speaking at the brief ceremony, the Chairman of the Sports Committee, Mr. Kabu Oman, expressed appreciation to the University Management for prioritising the refurbishment of the gym. He noted that the restoration of the facility demonstrates ATU’s commitment to promoting regular physical activity as part of campus life.

Mr Oman disclosed that the Sports Unit would soon introduce a structured fitness program designed to meet the diverse needs of staff and students. He also emphasised the importance of proper handling and maintenance of gym equipment, stressing that responsible use would be key to sustaining the facility in the long term.

 

Vice-Chancellor Highlights Health Benefits of Exercise

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, underscored the critical role of exercise in enhancing both physical and mental health. He described the refurbished gym as an integral part of ATU’s broader strategy to create a healthy, supportive, and student-centered campus environment.

The Vice-Chancellor congratulated members of the Sports Committee and all individuals whose efforts contributed to the successful reopening of the gym.

 

Expansion Plans and Professional Supervision

Professor Acakpovi further announced plans to expand the gym facility in the future to cater for the growing university population. He encouraged lecturers, staff, and students to incorporate regular exercise into their schedules, despite academic and professional demands.

He also revealed that the University has appointed a permanent gym instructor to provide professional supervision, guidance, and ensure the safe use of equipment. Users of the facility were urged to strictly comply with the gym’s rules and regulations to maintain safety and order.

 

Guided Tour of Refurbished Facility

 

Following the formal remarks and ribbon-cutting ceremony, the gym instructor led staff and students on a guided tour of the facility, explaining the functions and proper usage of the various exercise equipment available.

 

Enhancing Campus Life

The reopening of the gym is expected to significantly enhance campus life, offering a dedicated space for fitness, stress relief, and healthy social interaction. The initiative reinforces ATU’s commitment to holistic education, staff welfare, and student well-being.
