Teacher Unions and Government Resume Negotiations on Pending Issues
Teacher unions and government representatives reconvene today at the Ministry of Education Conference room to resume discussions on unresolved matters that led to recent strike actions within the education sector.
Progress Made
During a previous meeting on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, three out of the nine issues raised by the teacher unions were addressed. These included agreements to provide laptops to all teachers by the end of June 2024, draft a Scheme of Service by April 8, 2024, and resolve salary blockages within one month.
Ongoing Negotiations
The remaining six issues were deliberated on during a meeting on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Among these is the demand for an increase in Continuous Professional Development allowances from GHC1200 to GHC3000. Additionally, teachers are advocating for a Deprived Area Allowance of 20% of basic pay for those willing to work in underserved regions.
Challenges Faced
Despite efforts to find common ground, both parties encountered challenges in reaching a consensus during the April 4 meeting. Consequently, the discussions were adjourned to Monday, April 6, 2024, for further deliberation.
