Discover the association’s achievements, its impact on teacher trainees, and Ferdinand’s perspective on recent developments and concerns within TTAG.
On February 3, 2024, the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) celebrated a significant milestone—28 years of relentless dedication to the welfare of teacher trainees across the Colleges of Education in Ghana. Ellis Ferdinand, a notable Ghanaian Education Blogger, takes us on a journey through TTAG’s history, successes, and current challenges.
Established in 1996, TTAG has played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights and needs of teacher trainees. Among its achievements, TTAG successfully lobbied for the provision of buses for colleges of education, facilitating the movement for Teaching Practice. The association has also been a driving force in the push for the upgrade of colleges of education into universities, contributing to the academic landscape of Ghana.
TTAG takes pride in its legacy of producing quality leaders who have transitioned to become Student Representative Council (SRC) presidents in various universities, including UCC, UEW, UMAT, Valley View, and more. The association has been a vocal advocate for trainees in engagements with the Principals of Colleges of Education and the Government.
Ferdinand, in his reflection, highlights the vibrancy of TTAG’s congresses, praising them as the most dynamic in Ghana. He emphasizes the quality of ideas and active participation by associate members, positioning TTAG as a leading student association in the country.
However, Ferdinand expresses concerns about recent developments within TTAG. He argues that the younger generation may not fully understand the association’s initial push to become a bloc in the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). He points out that the focus should be on embedding TTAG’s ideas into NUGS and not merely seeking token appointments.
Furthermore, Ferdinand raises issues regarding the current leadership and decision-making processes within TTAG. He criticizes the lack of respect shown to elders and the challenge in selecting capable leaders due to personal interests and greed among the younger generation. The absence of tangible assets after 28 years is a point of concern, with Ferdinand calling for a new direction for the association.
As TTAG reflects on its past achievements and faces current challenges, the hope is for a rejuvenation that ensures a bright future for the association. The anniversary marks not only a celebration of TTAG’s history but also a call for introspection and positive change to guide the association forward.
