“John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), promises a 20% allowance for teachers and a review of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy within the first 100 days if elected as President in the 2024 general election. The proposed allowance aims to attract teachers to underserved rural communities facing a shortage of teaching staff.”
Western Region, Ghana, – John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced plans to introduce a 20% allowance for teachers if elected as President in the upcoming 2024 general election. The proposed allowance is aimed at addressing the shortage of teaching staff in underserved rural communities.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in the Western Region, Mahama emphasized the critical need for such an allowance to attract educators to areas facing challenges in education. He acknowledged the complexities of categorizing areas as rural or urban and assured that the challenges hindering the successful implementation of the allowance would be addressed.
“In Takoradi here, there are some villages within the city. Where will you categorize that? All of these would have to be considered. We will sit with you to address this,” Mahama assured the crowd, recognizing the importance of collaborative decision-making.
Free SHS Review
In addition to the teachers’ allowance, Mahama also pledged to review the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy within the first 100 days of his next term if elected. While acknowledging the positive impact of the policy on the country’s education, he highlighted the need for a thorough review to enhance its benefits for both students and parents.
“When you implement a policy, you must take stock after a while to see whether you are achieving your target. When we win power in 2024, we will have a forum to review the education sector, and we will invite teachers, parents, educationists, and students. We will address issues that are not going well, like the feeding of students,” Mahama stated.
He expressed the intention to address challenges in the Free SHS policy, emphasizing that while the policy is commendable, measures must be put in place to ensure affordability. Mahama cited rising costs and economic mismanagement affecting expenses related to the education of students under the Free SHS program.
The 2024 election pledges by John Dramani Mahama indicate a focus on education reform, with proposals aimed at supporting teachers and improving the effectiveness of existing policies for the benefit of students and parents.
