The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both school and Private Candidates, 2023. The results are now accessible online, and statistics reveal details about the candidates and examination malpractices.

 

Accra, Ghana: 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates had their subject results cancelled for bringing foreign materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both school and private candidates in 2023. The results are now accessible online, and the Council has provided detailed statistics about the candidates and examination malpractices.

Accessing Results:

  • The results for school candidates will be dispatched to their respective schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. Private candidates can access their results on the council’s website, www.waecgh.org.
  • School candidates who prefer to do so can also access their results online at the council’s website.

Statistics:

  • A total of 600,900 candidates entered for the school examination, comprising 300,404 males and 300,496 females from 18,993 participating schools.
  • The examination took place at 2,137 centres across the country, and out of the total number, 3,366 candidates were absent.
  • The BECE for Private Candidates recorded a total entry figure of 1,839 candidates, with 61 candidates absent.

Examination Malpractices:

  • Investigations into irregularities during the examination and marking of scripts led to various decisions, including the cancellation of subject results and entire results for both school and private candidates.
  1. Cancellation of Subject Results: 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates had their subject results cancelled for bringing foreign materials into the examination hall or colluding with other candidates.
  2. Cancellation of Entire Results: 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate had their entire results cancelled for possession of mobile phones in the examination hall.
  3. Withholding of Subject Results: 180 school candidates and 4 private candidates had their subject results withheld for various suspected offences.
  4. Withholding of Entire Results: 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates had their entire results withheld for various suspected offences.
  • Additionally, the scripts of 22,270 candidates in certain subjects are being scrutinized for reported cases of mass cheating, and their results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations.

Caution:

  • WAEC cautions all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee, emphasizing that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated.
