Prestea, Ghana– A sombre mood envelops the Teberebie Electoral Area in Prestea, Western Region, as the community mourns the tragic loss of a 34-year-old teacher and incumbent assemblyman, Manasseh Addison Sackey, popularly known as Teacher Obour. The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, December 4, 2023, as he drowned in a river connecting Aklika while campaigning for re-election.
Teacher Obour, a dedicated educator at Teberebie M/A Junior High School, embarked on a campaign trip to nearby villages. Despite warnings from his campaign crew about the risks involved, he insisted on proceeding, considering it a short distance that he could cover and return promptly.
Accompanied by five others and wearing Wellington boots, Teacher Obour and his team ventured into the river using a canoe. Tragically, in the middle of the river, the canoe capsized. While three members managed to return and report the incident, Teacher Obour and another gentleman were reported to have drowned.
A search team was swiftly dispatched, and after a few hours, Teacher Obour’s lifeless body was recovered around 6:00 pm. The body has been deposited at the Tarkwa Municipal Mortuary.
The incident bears a haunting resemblance to a similar fate suffered by a former assembly member in the same constituency four years ago, marking a poignant reminder of the inherent risks associated with political campaigns.
The community is left in shock and grief as they come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss of Teacher Obour, a respected educator and dedicated public servant. The entire locality extends condolences to the family and loved ones of the late assemblyman during this challenging time.
