Ferdinand | EducationGhana | July 15 | Organised Labour begins Indefinite Strike Over SSNIT Stake Sale to Rock City Hotel today
Organised Labour, led by the TUC, declares an indefinite strike from July 15, 2024, protesting the NPRA’s approval of SSNIT’s stake sale to Rock City Hotel. The unions demand the termination of the deal.
Organised Labour, led by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced an indefinite strike action starting on July 15, 2024.
This decision follows the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) controversial approval allowing the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to proceed with selling a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.
NPRA Approval
The NPRA had initially halted SSNIT’s sale of its hotel stakes, demanding more details. However, it later cleared SSNIT to proceed with the deal, a move that has sparked widespread discontent among union members.
TUC’s Stance
Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the TUC, expressed the union’s frustration with the NPRA’s decision. He criticized the lack of further engagement with SSNIT after the initial halt and directed all union members to stop working from July 15 until SSNIT cancels the sale.

Dr. Yaw Baah
“From Monday 15 of July 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels.”
Minister’s Position
Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah addressed Parliament, confirming the NPRA’s clearance for SSNIT to proceed. He noted that the NPRA had reviewed the sale process and deemed it appropriate for SSNIT to move forward.
Union’s Argument
Organised Labour argues that the sale of SSNIT’s stake to Rock City Hotel is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers. They demand the termination of the deal, emphasizing that it could negatively impact the welfare of workers who are the primary stakeholders in SSNIT.
Next Steps:
Significant disruptions across various sectors are anticipated with the strike set to commence on July 15, 2024. The union’s primary demand is for SSNIT to terminate the sale process, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution through dialogue between the involved parties.
