“The Ghana Education Service (GES) has committed to presenting a draft Scheme of Service to address teachers’ concerns, including roles, responsibilities, and promotional obligations. This development comes as part of ongoing negotiations with teacher unions to avert strike action.”

Introduction

In a significant development, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has agreed to address longstanding concerns raised by teacher unions by presenting a draft Scheme of Service for review. This initiative aims to provide clear guidelines for teachers’ roles and responsibilities, addressing key issues that had led to potential strike action.

Progress in Negotiations

At a crucial meeting held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, representatives from the National Labour Commission (NLC), GES, and the Ministry of Education (MoE) deliberated on several critical concerns raised by teacher unions. Among the resolved issues are:

  1. Draft Scheme of Service: The GES has committed to presenting a draft Scheme of Service to the Teacher Unions for review by April 8, 2024. This initiative seeks to establish clear guidelines for teachers’ roles and responsibilities, addressing concerns about the lack of a structured framework.
  2. Provision of Laptops: Another resolved issue includes the provision of laptops to teachers, addressing the need for technological support in education.
  3. Resolution of Blocked Salaries: Efforts will be made to reinstate salaries blocked by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), ensuring that affected educators receive their rightful compensation.
