NSS Organizes Pre-Service Orientation for KNUST Students: New Policy to Align Deployment with Expertise
The National Service Scheme (NSS) recently organized a pre-service orientation programme for prospective national service personnel from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
This orientation aimed to guide students through the new NSS policy and the registration process, while also providing an opportunity for students to ask questions about the scheme.
New Deployment Policy
Addressing the students, the Executive Director of the NSS, Osei Assibey Antwi, introduced a significant change in the scheme’s deployment strategy.
Unlike previous years, the new policy ensures that all prospective personnel are deployed to areas that require their specific expertise. This approach aims to enhance the relevance and impact of their service, aligning their assignments with their fields of study.
“The new focus of the scheme is to deploy students to areas where they can gain valuable experience or become self-employed after their national service,” said Antwi.
For instance, national service personnel assigned to teaching roles will receive training in pedagogic studies, equipping them with the necessary skills to pursue a teaching career. Those interested in teaching can further their education with a diploma and sit for the licensure examination to become certified teachers.
Supporting Agri-Business
Additionally, Antwi highlighted the support available for those interested in agri-business. Through a partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, prospective entrepreneurs will receive assistance to establish their businesses post-service.
This initiative aims to ensure that graduates can apply their skills in relevant fields and contribute significantly to national development. The support provided is designed to be repaid through the produce generated from their businesses.
Expectations and Conduct
Antwi also emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in their service roles. He urged the personnel to be exemplary representatives of their families and institutions.
He noted that there had been instances where institutions requested the withdrawal of personnel due to insubordination and indecent dressing, underscoring the need for appropriate conduct.
The orientation programme marks a pivotal shift in the NSS’s approach, promising a more targeted and beneficial experience for both the service personnel and the communities they serve.
For more information on the new NSS policy and registration process, students and prospective personnel are encouraged to attend similar orientation sessions and stay informed through official NSS communications.
