West Africa Senior High School Celebrates 78th Anniversary

The West Africa Senior High School (WASS) in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region celebrated its 78 years of existence with a grand speech and prize-giving day event last Friday.

Established in January 1946 in Accra, WASS has a mission to discover and nurture the diverse abilities of its students through classroom experiences, field trips, mentoring, and coaching, guiding them to the numerous opportunities available.

Core Values and Theme

The school’s core values include dedication, integrity, self-discipline, hard work, teamwork, tolerance, respect, excellence, and perseverance.

The celebration, themed “Unearthing Learners’ Abilities in an Enabling Environment,” also served as a scholar festival, rewarding deserving students, teaching, and non-teaching staff.

Acknowledging Contributions

Dr. Shine Ofori, the Headmistress of WASS, praised the various stakeholders for their support, including the government, the West Africa Senior High School Old Students Association (WASSOSA), the Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency, Francis Xavier Sosu, the Adentan Municipal Assembly, the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, the PTA, and the board of governors.

She highlighted recent contributions, such as the provision of bunk beds by the government and a borehole donated by Qatar Charity through MP Francis Xavier Sosu, which addressed an acute water shortage in the girls’ boarding house.

Old Students Association

Dr. Ofori emphasized the continuous support from WASSOSA, noting their regular engagement and timely interventions that have significantly contributed to the school’s progress. “The old students have stayed true to their alma mater with timely interventions repeatedly,” she remarked.

Scholarfest

Dr. Ofori announced that the scholarfest, initiated this year, will become an annual event to motivate students and staff. She appealed for donations to support future scholarfest programs.

Keynote Address

Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana and President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), delivered the keynote address.

An alumnus of WASS (WASSOSA 1994), Prof. Gyampo commended the staff for their dedication to effective teaching and learning. He stressed the importance of basic infrastructure in creating an enabling environment for students to realize their potential.

Solidarity Messages and Encouragement

Solidarity messages were delivered by the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, the Adentan Municipal Director of Education, the Board Chairman of the school, the President of WASSOSA, representatives from sister senior high schools, and the PTA.

The School Prefect, Yussif Ilyas, encouraged his fellow students to embrace change with courage and optimism, emphasizing that determination and resilience can help overcome any obstacles.

The 78th anniversary of WASS was a memorable event, celebrating the school’s rich history, acknowledging the contributions of various stakeholders, and looking forward to continued excellence in education.
