“The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that the marking of the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts will commence on October 9. Get insights into the process and challenges ahead.”

Accra, Ghana : The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced that the marking of scripts for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will kick off on Monday, October 9, 2023. This update comes after the coordination process was initiated by WAEC, bringing markers together to acquaint themselves with the marking scheme.

According to John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the coordination process began last Wednesday and is set to conclude on Friday. Following this, the actual marking of the scripts will commence next week.

However, Mr. Kapi mentioned a challenge concerning the release of funds, stating, “So we have started the process, but what we are saying is that if monies are not released, we may not be able to complete it.”

Addressing concerns about the delay in script marking, Mr. Kapi clarified that there is no strike among markers. The WAEC held discussions with the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, assuring the release of funds for the marking process.

Earlier, there were apprehensions regarding the marking of this year’s BECE due to government indebtedness to WAEC. However, the government subsequently released GH¢50.5 million to WAEC, covering the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the BECE.

Out of this amount, GH¢40 million was allocated for the successful conduct of the WASSCE, while GH¢10.5 million was set aside for the BECE.
