UEW Boosts STEM Education with Donation from Dext Technology

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has significantly enhanced its practical teaching capabilities with the recent donation of a STEM Box from Dext Technology.

This contribution is set to transform classroom activities and foster a deeper understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among students.

Donation Ceremony Highlights

The donation ceremony took place on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Council Chamber, North Campus, Winneba. Prof. Victor Antwi, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, received the STEM Box on behalf of the University Management.

He praised Dext Technology for their commitment to the memorandum of understanding signed two months ago, which included the provision of scientific equipment to the DBE.

Prof. Antwi emphasized the importance of practical activities in effective science education:

“What you have brought to us is going to help our students very much. Science is such that when you teach the pupils and you do not relate it to real-life situations or involve students in the practical aspect, they find it difficult to understand. In certain situations, you need the practical aspect to reinforce the theoretical; otherwise, they will not fully absorb whatever you have taught them.”

Dext Technology’s Mission

Mr. Caleb Fugah, Director of Strategy at Dext Technology, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for partnering with UEW. He highlighted Dext Technology’s mission to revolutionize elementary education and make STEM learning more accessible and engaging:

“These materials are indeed one of the defining technologies in 21st-century learning, where we shrunk laboratories into small boxes so that every child can have the opportunity to learn science in and out of the classroom. So, we are not limited by a space where there is supposed to be a laboratory where you are always supposed to go.”

Training Session for Lecturers

Following the donation, Dext Technology conducted a training session for Basic Education Science lecturers at the Faculty Block, North Campus. The training aimed to equip lecturers with the necessary skills to utilize the STEM toolkits in their teaching effectively.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, Acting Registrar of UEW; Prof. Hinneh Kusi, Dean of the School of Education and Life-Long Learning (SELLL); Prof. Sakina Acquah, Head of Department, Basic Education; and Dr. Cosmos Eminah, lecturer at the DBE.

Their presence underscored the university’s commitment to enhancing STEM education and providing students with the tools needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving academic landscape.
