Ghana Education Service (GES) uncovers six ghost names in the Ashanti Region payroll, with one ghost name receiving 31 months of salary. An investigation was launched to address the issue.
Ghost Names Uncovered in GES Ashanti Region Payroll
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has uncovered a disturbing payroll fraud case in the Ashanti Region, where six ghost names have been validated to receive salaries for over a year. One of these ghost names, identified as Boamah Emmanuel K, has received 31 months of unearned salaries.
Details of the Discovery
According to a letter signed and released on May 21, 2024, by the Acting Director of the Human Resource Management Division (HRMD), Ms. Angela Frimpomaa, GES has requested the Regional Director to liaise with the head of the school and the School Improvement Support Officer (SISO) through their District Directors.
They are to report to the Deputy Director-General (Management Services) for their response regarding the fraudulent activity.
The release highlights that unknown individuals have been receiving salaries in the name of six deceased staff members, a significant breach of ethical and legal standards. The most egregious case involves Boamah Emmanuel K, who has been fraudulently validated and paid for 31 months.
Actions Taken
The GES is immediately addressing this issue and preventing further occurrences. The Regional Director has been instructed to coordinate with relevant school authorities to provide a comprehensive report to the Deputy Director-General. This report is expected to include detailed responses from the implicated schools and District Directors.
Implications and Next Steps
The discovery of these ghost names in the payroll system underscores the need for stringent monitoring and validation processes within the GES. The service is committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in its operations. Measures will be taken to rectify the payroll system, and those found complicit in this fraud will face appropriate disciplinary actions.
This scandal has raised significant concerns about the efficiency of payroll management within the GES. As the investigation progresses, the GES aims to implement more robust systems to detect and prevent such fraudulent activities in the future.
The uncovering of ghost names in the Ashanti Region payroll is a serious issue that the Ghana Education Service is addressing with urgency. The ongoing investigation and subsequent actions will be crucial in restoring trust and ensuring the integrity of the payroll system within the GES.
