”The President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PrinCof) has stated that the Halls of Residence in Colleges of Education across the 46 public colleges of education are inadequate. This is a major challenge facing the colleges, as it makes it difficult to accommodate all the students. The President has proposed collaborating with private organizations to establish hostel facilities for trainees.”

Ejisu-Abankrom, Ghana. The President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PrinCof) and Principal of Accra College of Education, Professor Samuel Awinkene  Atintono, stated that the Halls of Residence in Colleges of Education across the 46 public colleges of education are inadequate.

Atintono made this remark during the 27th General Assembly of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) held at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Village in Ejisu-Abankrom, ASHANTI REGION.

The General Assembly shed light on some infrastructural challenges faced by the Colleges of Education following the implementation of the four-year Bachelor of Education Programmes throughout the country’s colleges of education.

Regarding the infrastructural deficit, Prof. Atintono mentioned that with the exception of Kibi College of Education, other Colleges of Education lack the required facilities to run the four-year B.Ed Programme.

He further stated that the current halls of residence in the colleges are inadequate for the four-year programme and insufficient to accommodate all the students.

However, Prince Oben-Himah, the President of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), emphasized the need for investment in academic resources such as lecture halls, electronic library facilities, and other learning materials.

He suggested that private organizations could provide hostel facilities for trainees, while the government focuses on improving academic infrastructure.

During the TTAG General  Assembly, Oben-Himah firmly expressed that the government should shift its focus from constructing student halls to prioritizing the improvement of lecture halls, electronic library facilities, and other academic resources.

He proposed collaborating with private organizations, such as SSNIT, to establish hostel facilities for trainees, introducing an innovative solution to address the pressing infrastructure challenges faced by colleges of education nationwide.
