Accra Circuit Court Grants Bail Amid Ongoing Investigation
Three teachers, Samuel Mensah Amelikpo, David Bacha Ntenyam, and Daniel Ofori Boateng, have been arrested in connection with an employment scam involving the Ghana Education Service (GES), totaling GH¢394,500. Here’s what we know about the case so far.
Arrest and Bail
The accused appeared before an Accra Circuit Court, where they were granted bail in the amount of GH¢350,000 each.
Additionally, they must provide two sureties each, either from the teaching profession within the Ghana Education Service or family members.
As a condition of their bail, they are required to report to the police every Wednesday. The case has been adjourned until April 30, 2024.
Details of the Scam
The teachers are alleged to have conspired to defraud 42 individuals by promising them employment within the GES in exchange for monetary payments.
The complainant, Sumaila Awueidze, organized the applicants who were interested in the job placements based on Amelikpo’s assurances of securing employment opportunities within the GES.
Investigation Findings
During the investigation, it was revealed that Amelikpo collected GH¢394,000 from the complainants under false pretenses but failed to deliver on his promise.
He implicated Bacha and Boateng as his accomplices, leading to their subsequent arrest. Bacha admitted to receiving GH¢388,000 from Amelikpo, while Boateng confessed to receiving money and depositing it into Vodafone Cash wallet accounts provided by an individual named Reuben Bempoh, claiming to work at the GES National Headquarters.
Ongoing Police Investigation
The police investigation into the matter is ongoing as they gather evidence and information related to the employment scam. A total of GH¢70,000 has been recovered from Boateng and returned to the complainant, but efforts are underway to uncover further details surrounding the scam.
Conclusion
As the investigation progresses, the case serves as a reminder of the vigilance required to combat fraudulent activities and uphold integrity within the education sector. The accused teachers now await further legal proceedings as law enforcement continues its efforts to bring justice to those affected by the scam.
