University of Cape Coast, [Date] – In a historic move, the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Coast has appointed Carruthers Tetteh as its first visually impaired lecturer. Beginning his role in December 2023, Mr. Tetteh is responsible for teaching Criminal Law and the Ghana Legal System, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of inclusive and diverse legal education.
Mr. Tetteh’s journey towards this remarkable achievement has been characterized by determination and an unwavering passion for law, particularly in advocating for the rights of the less privileged. His life took an unexpected turn when he lost his sight at the age of 11 due to a drug reaction. Despite this setback, he remained resolute in pursuing his dreams.
In 2015, Mr. Tetteh graduated with a first-class degree in English and History from the University of Cape Coast, where he also earned the distinction of being the top-performing student among those with visual impairments. Undeterred by his visual impairment, he continued his educational journey and obtained another first-class degree in Law from the same university.
Reflecting on his journey after his appointment, Mr. Tetteh shared his experience, stating, “In 2002, at the age of 11, I lost my sight as a result of a drug reaction when I was in primary five.” He recounted the adverse reactions he had experienced after taking a prescribed drug following a visit to a private hospital in Winneba, Ghana.
He continued, “So, in September 2002, when I was admitted to the Akropong School for the Blind, it became apparent to me that my life had taken a different path because I would now be surrounded by people who are blind.”
During his first appearance in the classroom, Mr. Tetteh captivated the level 300 students with his profound knowledge of Criminal Law. He expressed his long-standing interest in studying law, saying, “Law has always been my passion since childhood. I have always aspired to be in a position where I can advocate for the less privileged. This passion has driven me throughout my life.”
He further added, “At the Law Faculty, I exerted my utmost effort to set the right example, fully aware that I was the first visually impaired student to be admitted to the Law Faculty at UCC.”
The appointment of Carruthers Tetteh as the first visually impaired lecturer at the Faculty of Law is a testament to the university’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and providing opportunities for individuals with varying abilities to excel in the field of law. This milestone highlights the potential for positive change in legal education, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of physical abilities, can contribute to the advancement of legal knowledge and practice.
