Ferdinand | EducationGhana |August 30|New Introductions: SHS Science Students to be Exempted from Integrated Science and Core Maths
The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced that all public Senior High School (SHS) students will be given one laptop each. He also said that science students will be exempted from studying integrated science and core mathematics, and will instead be allowed to study French or any other subject that will make them globally competitive.
The Minister made the announcement at a teachers’ forum held at Kumasi Anglican Senior High School on Thursday, August 24, 2023. He was in attendance, along with all the major educational stakeholders in Ashanti Region.
Dr. Adutwum said that the laptops are a way to provide SHS students with the digital tools they need to succeed in their studies.
He said that the exemption from integrated science and core mathematics is to allow science students to focus on more specialized subjects that will prepare them for the 21st-century workforce.
The announcement was met with mixed reactions from stakeholders. Some welcomed the move, saying that it would help to improve the quality of education in Ghana. Others expressed concerns about the cost of the laptops and the impact it will have on the school curriculum.
