Ferdinand | EducationGhana | January 24 | Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Approves Over 1,000 New Courses for Public Universities
“GTEC announces the approval of more than 1,000 new courses for study by public universities in Ghana. The move is aimed at streamlining the academic calendar and ensuring institutions focus on their mandated areas. Applications for the new programs will be accepted starting February 2024, and a new body will be established to monitor and ensure relevance to the country’s developmental aspirations.”
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has given its approval for over 1,000 new courses to be offered by public universities across the country. The announcement was made by the Acting Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, during a media briefing in Kumasi on Monday, January 22, 2024.
This development is seen as a strategic move to streamline the academic calendar of tertiary institutions and ensure that programs offered align with their mandated areas. GTEC emphasized the need for institutions to focus on their niche and contribute to the developmental aspirations of the country.
According to Prof. Jinapor, the approval of the new courses is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and relevance of tertiary education in Ghana. Starting from February 1, 2024, GTEC will begin accepting applications from various tertiary institutions for these newly approved programs.
To oversee the policy approval and ensure that institutions stay within their mandate areas, GTEC will establish a new body. This body will play a crucial role in monitoring and guiding the introduction of new programs, emphasizing their relevance to the needs of the country’s evolving educational landscape.
“We want institutions to stay in their niche; institutions cannot be doing anything and everything. The system whereby you have technology institutions mandated to do technology-oriented programs but today doing Akan, Twi, Dagbani, I think should be something of the past,” Prof. Jinapor stated.
The move by GTEC reflects a commitment to aligning tertiary education with national development goals, fostering specialization, and ensuring that institutions contribute meaningfully to the country’s educational and economic progress. As the application process begins in February, institutions will have the opportunity to introduce innovative and impactful programs that meet the evolving needs of students and society.
