The National Teaching Council and Ghana Education Service announce National CPD Day on 28th March 2025, focusing on enhancing teachers’ mental health and psychosocial well-being through school-based training.
National CPD Day 2025: A Step Towards Enhancing Teachers’ Mental Health and Well-being
In a significant move towards supporting the professional development of Ghana’s educators, the National Teaching Council (NTC) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the observance of National CPD Day on 28th March 2025.
The National CPD Day is part of the government’s continued efforts to enhance the skills and well-being of teachers, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the future of Ghanaian students. This day, dedicated to teacher capacity development, will feature school-based training sessions aimed at strengthening the competencies of pre-tertiary teachers.
This year’s CPD Day will focus specifically on the theme “Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being of Teachers,” a critical issue that has gained growing recognition in recent years. As educators work in an environment that can be stressful and demanding, it is essential that they are provided with the necessary tools to maintain their mental health and overall well-being.
Targeting Teachers’ Well-being
The training, which is mandatory for all pre-tertiary teachers, aims to address the challenges that many educators face, including stress, burnout, and mental health struggles. It is designed to equip teachers with practical strategies to cope with emotional and psychological pressures, ensuring they can continue to perform at their best while maintaining personal health.
In a statement, the National Teaching Council emphasized the importance of continuous professional development (CPD) in ensuring that teachers remain effective and resilient in the classroom. “Teachers are at the heart of education, and their well-being is paramount to the success of our educational system. By prioritizing their mental health, we are also fostering an environment that will allow them to better support the mental health of their students,” said a representative from the NTC.
School-Based Training for All Pre-Tertiary Teachers
The school-based nature of the training is particularly important as it allows teachers to engage in a more flexible and relevant learning experience within their work environment. The CPD session will provide teachers with evidence-based approaches to managing stress and maintaining a positive mindset, both essential for effective teaching and learning.
Teachers will also learn about the importance of a balanced work-life routine, mindfulness techniques, and the role of physical health in improving mental well-being. The training will include interactive workshops, expert-led discussions, and resource sharing on how to foster mental resilience and psychological health among teachers.
The NTC and GES strongly encourage all pre-tertiary educators to actively participate in the CPD sessions. This initiative is a part of the broader Continuous Professional Development framework, which seeks to strengthen teacher performance and build an education system that can withstand future challenges.
Improving Teacher Capacity for Better Education
In addition to mental health training, CPD activities are designed to improve the overall capacity of teachers. The NTC has consistently outlined the importance of professional development, stating that when teachers grow in competence, they are more likely to inspire and motivate students to achieve greater academic success.
The NTC’s focus on teacher well-being aligns with the broader goals of the Education Strategic Plan (ESP) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which calls for inclusive and quality education for all. Investing in teachers’ well-being and professional growth is one of the most effective ways to ensure that the education system meets global standards.
Encouraging Teacher Participation
The NTC is calling on all educators to actively participate in this training, which will be delivered through school-based workshops. The council also encourages school heads and education authorities to ensure that teachers under their supervision attend this vital professional development session.
The NTC further emphasized that the CPD Day forms part of Ghana’s broader effort to enhance the teaching profession, ensuring that teachers are not only effective in the classroom but also supported in their personal and professional lives.
