In a recent announcement, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially confirmed the subjects to be included in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Scheduled to commence from Monday, July 8th, 2024, to Friday, July 12th, 2024, the BECE will cover a range of core and optional subjects.

Core Subjects:

The common core subjects pre-selected for the examination include English Language, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Mathematics, Science, Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Computing. These subjects are mandatory for all candidates sitting for the BECE.

Optional Subjects:

In addition to the core subjects, candidates are required to select ANY ONE of the following optional subjects: French, Arabic, or a Ghanaian language. While French and Arabic are commonly chosen options, the inclusion of Ghanaian language as an optional subject has sparked considerable debate and raised numerous concerns.

Concerns and Debate:

Many stakeholders have questioned the decision to make Ghanaian language optional, expressing concerns about its implications for cultural heritage and national identity.

Some argue that by making Ghanaian language optional, GES may be inadvertently discouraging students from learning their native languages, which are integral to their cultural heritage.

Comparisons have been drawn with other nations, such as China, where the teaching of Chinese from an early age is prioritized as a means of preserving cultural identity.

Ghanaian Languages:

With eleven Ghanaian languages to choose from, candidates must select their preferred Ghanaian language option from a dropdown list during registration.

Important Note:

Candidates are reminded that they will not be graded for subjects they were not registered for, emphasizing the importance of careful selection during the registration process.
