“Get the latest update on the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) subjects. Learn about the core subjects and optional choices confirmed by the Ghana Education Service (GES).”

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the subjects that will be included in the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), setting the stage for students preparing for the crucial assessment.

Scheduled to commence on Monday, July 8th July 2024, and run through Friday, 12th July 2024, the BECE will cover a range of core subjects for assessing students’ foundational knowledge and skills.

The confirmed core subjects for the 2024 BECE are:

  1. English Language
  2. Social Studies
  3. Religious and Moral Education
  4. Mathematics
  5. Science
  6. Career Technology
  7. Creative Art and Design
  8. Computing

In addition to these core subjects, candidates will have the opportunity to select one optional subject from the following list:

  1. French
  2. Arabic
  3. Ghanaian language

However, the decision to make the Ghanaian language an optional subject has sparked debate and raised questions among stakeholders. Many are concerned that this move may undermine the importance of indigenous languages in Ghanaian education.

With eleven Ghanaian languages to choose from, candidates will need to select their preferred option from a drop-down list during registration.

It’s important to note that candidates will not be graded for subjects they were not registered for, emphasizing the significance of careful selection during the registration process.

As students and educators prepare for the 2024 BECE, the inclusion of core and optional subjects underscores the GES’s commitment to providing a comprehensive assessment framework while also inviting reflection on the evolving landscape of Ghanaian education.
