New identity pays tribute to the founding legacy of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills



The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho has officially been renamed the John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, in honour of the late president’s legacy in Ghana’s health and education sectors.



Renaming to Honour Presidential Legacy



The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the renaming of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho as the John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences (JEA Mills UHAS). The announcement was made during the official inauguration of the university’s newly constituted Governing Council at the Ministry of Education in Accra.

According to the Minister, the renaming recognises the profound contributions of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the university. President Mills, known for his passion for education and public health, championed the vision of UHAS as a centre of excellence for training health professionals to meet national and international needs.



Council Chair Applauds Honour

Chairperson of the newly inaugurated Governing Council, Professor Kodzo Gavua, warmly welcomed the renaming and expressed gratitude on behalf of the university community. He emphasized that this honour would inspire the institution to uphold its founding vision and continue striving for academic distinction and national service.

“The renaming is both symbolic and inspirational. It reminds us of our responsibility to honour President Mills’ values of integrity, service, and intellectual excellence,” Prof. Gavua stated.

    Now bearing the name JEA Mills UHAS, the institution remains one of Ghana’s leading public universities focused on health and allied sciences. Since its founding in 2011, UHAS has grown into a hub for medical and health education in the sub-region, producing highly skilled health professionals across disciplines such as medicine, nursing, public health, and biomedical sciences.

    The renaming is expected to boost national and international visibility for the institution while preserving the legacy of a president who championed human development through education and healthcare.


    The renaming of UHAS to the John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences cements the late President’s legacy as a visionary leader in education and public health.
