The University for Development Studies celebrates Professor Sanatu Alidu for winning the 2025 Best Female Farmer award in the Northern Region, marking a major milestone in agricultural innovation.The University for Development Studies (UDS) has celebrated a historic moment as Professor Sanatu Alidu was honoured as the 2025 Best Female Farmer for the Northern Region. The award was announced on Farmer’s Day and highlights her contributions to research, innovation, and community impact.

Recognising leadership in agricultural innovation

Professor Alidu, an associate professor at UDS and founder of Dinmbone Farm Gates, has established herself as a leader in modern, climate-smart agriculture. She is also a member of the National Seed Trade Association of Ghana, where her work continues to influence national seed development.

Breakthrough in climate-smart cowpea varieties
In recent months, Professor Alidu and her team developed six new climate-smart, drought-tolerant cowpea varieties. All six have received conditional release and are awaiting final approval from the National Seed Council (NSC). This marks the first time researchers from UDS have created crop varieties for nationwide release.The new varieties include:
  1. UDS-Tu Bilichini
  2. UDS-Kachaɣu Tuya
  3. UDS-AGRAWAC Tuya
  4. UDS-JIRCAS Sasage
  5. UDS-Ny-25
  6. UDS-Zara Tuya
These innovations are expected to support food security, improve yields for farmers, and expand Ghana’s adoption of climate-resilient crops.

A milestone for UDS

The University described the recognition as a proud moment for its growing research community. The award reflects years of commitment to practical science, field experimentation, and farmer-focused solutions.
