Ferdinand EducationGhana | January 25 | Teachers Call for Nationwide Boycott of Katon-Organised Programmes Over Credibility Concerns

Teachers across Ghana are calling for a boycott of programmes organised by Katon, citing defective TM1 laptops, non-functional warranties, alleged exploitative repair practices, and unresolved concerns surrounding the Katon Meet CPD platform.

Teachers Raise Fresh Concerns Over Katon’s Engagements

A growing number of teachers are calling for a nationwide boycott of programmes organised by Katon, arguing that the company has repeatedly failed to meet the professional and technical needs of educators.

The call follows longstanding grievances linked to the Teachers Mate 1 (TM1) laptops, as well as recent frustrations surrounding the Katon Meet application used for Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

TM1 Laptops Described as Inferior and Forced on Teachers

Teachers say Katon manufactured and distributed TM1 laptops with inferior specifications, which educators were compelled to accept despite early concerns about quality and performance.

According to affected teachers, the laptops were presented as mandatory tools, leaving little room for choice or redress once defects began to surface.

Warranty System Allegedly Non-Functional Since Inception

A major concern raised is the non-functional warranty attached to the TM1 laptops. Teachers argue that the warranty has never worked in practice, forcing them to personally finance repairs for faults believed to be manufacturing-related.

This situation, they say, has placed an unfair financial burden on educators already struggling with limited resources.

Uniform Technical Defects Raise Design Questions

Teachers report that most TM1 laptops suffer from identical and recurring faults, which they argue points to poor design and substandard production.

Reported issues include broken hinges and neck breakages, screen failures, keyboard malfunctions, persistent driver and software problems, and weak internet connectivity.

Allegations Against Katon Repair Centres

Concerns have also been raised about repair centres established by Katon. Teachers allege overcharging and inflated repair costs, describing the practices as exploitative. Some teachers say complaints were formally reported to Katon, but no meaningful corrective action followed.

CPD Programme and Katon Meet App Spark New Frustrations

Attention has now shifted to the Katon Meet application, developed for a CPD programme initially scheduled for 15 January 2026.

Due to reported technical challenges with the app, the programme was postponed to 23 January 2026.

Teachers say there was no official communication from district education offices, echoing experiences from previous years where CPD sessions yielded little outcome after hours spent waiting in schools.

Questions Directed at the National Teaching Council

Teachers are questioning whether the National Teaching Council (NTC) is fully aware of the technical challenges surrounding the Katon Meet platform.

They cite unresponsive helplines, unanswered calls and messages, and significant stress experienced by educators attempting to access the application at short notice.

Concerns have also been raised about the last-minute release of app information, which teachers say forced hurried downloads simply to qualify for CPD points.

Calls for Alternative Platforms and Transparency

Some teachers are asking why NTC cannot develop its own CPD application or use existing systems such as the Teacher Portal Ghana to host professional development sessions.

They also expressed concern over what they describe as silence on the points-based CPD system, especially in light of annual salary deductions, calling for clearer communication on how these deductions translate into professional support and welfare.

Call to Action to Education Stakeholders

Teachers are calling on key institutions to intervene, urging the National Teaching Council to discontinue engagement with Katon for professional development activities.

They have also appealed to the Ministry of Education to ensure stronger oversight of NTC operations, while calling on the Ghana Education Service to prioritise the welfare and professional growth of its employees.

Teacher unions and associations, including GNAT, ICT teachers’ groups, and education-focused coalitions, have been urged to take a firm stand to defend what teachers describe as dignity, transparency, and quality in professional development.
