NaCCA Withdraws “Our World Our People” Subject from Standards-Based Curriculum

The National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) in Ghana has decided to withdraw the subject “Our World, Our People” (OWOP) from the Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC) starting from the 2024–2025 academic year. This decision, based on a review comparing OWOP and Religious and Moral Education (RME), aims to streamline the curriculum and reduce the workload for students.

Accra, Ghana: The National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) has announced the withdrawal of the “Our World, Our People” (OWOP) subject from the Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC). This decision, effective in the 2024–2025 academic year, follows a comprehensive review and comparison of OWOP and Religious and Moral Education (RME) subjects.

The NaCCA found significant overlap between the sub-strands and focus areas of OWOP and RME. Both subjects share common goals of instilling moral values, fostering respect for diversity, and promoting an understanding of Ghanaian culture and society. As a result, NaCCA concluded that the OWOP subject is redundant and that its content can be adequately covered within the RME subject.

The withdrawal of OWOP has generated mixed reactions. Supporters of the decision argue that it will streamline the curriculum and alleviate student workload. However, some express concerns that removing OWOP may lead to a decline in students’ understanding of Ghanaian culture and society.

Addressing these concerns, NaCCA assured stakeholders that the withdrawal of OWOP will not compromise the quality of education in Ghana. The Council emphasizes its commitment to delivering students a comprehensive and well-rounded education.

The decision to withdraw OWOP is attributed to the following reasons:

1. Overlap Between OWOP and RME Subjects: A review indicated significant similarities in sub-strands and focal areas between OWOP and RME.
2. Reduced Workload for Students: The withdrawal aims to streamline the curriculum and lessen the academic burden on students.
3. Improved Focus on Ghanaian Culture and Society within RME: NaCCA believes that the content of OWOP can be effectively incorporated into the RME subject, enhancing the understanding of Ghanaian culture and society.

The NaCCA management expressed confidence that this action would enrich the Standards-Based Curriculum, enabling a more focused and effective educational experience for learners.
