The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced the ‘National Prospectus,’ a harmonized guide for senior high and technical school students. This initiative aims to provide clarity on requirements for new students and streamline the purchasing process for parents. The prospectus categorizes items into basic needs and cleaning materials, enabling early preparation by parents.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced the ‘National Prospectus’ for senior high and technical schools in the country. This harmonized guide is designed to eliminate ambiguity regarding the requirements for first-year students, streamlining the process for both students and parents.

Under the new arrangement, all schools are expected to adhere to the national prospectus without adding extra items beyond the official prescription. This eliminates the need for parents to wait until the rollout of the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) before shopping for their children.

The national prospectus is structured into basic needs and cleaning materials, simplifying the purchasing process for parents. The items are categorized into two groups:

Category ‘A’: Includes basic items such as hard body suitcase or trunk, chop box or hard plastic container, toiletries, beddings, a pair of footwear (school-specific), underwear, cutlery, and educational materials like a mathematical set and scientific calculator.

Category ‘B’: Encompasses detergents, sanitary and cleaning materials such as liquid soap, hand gloves, washing powder, bleach, and cleaning items like brooms, a standing mop, a mop bucket, and a scrubbing brush.

Early Preparation for Parents

Dr Eric Nkansah, the Director-General of the GES, emphasized that this move aims to help parents buy the required items well before the release of the CSSPS. He stated that when parents know the items their children will need, they can start purchasing them in advance, bringing convenience and reducing stress.

The harmonized prospectus is designed to eliminate unnecessary items and prevent schools from including non-essential items as barriers to timely student enrollment.

Dr. Nkansah advised schools not to admit students solely based on their ability to procure all the items and urged parents to try and obtain the items as outlined in the prospectus.

The cost of the items in the prospectus is deemed reasonable and within the reach of all parents, addressing concerns about exorbitant costs associated with prospectuses in the past.

Dr. Nkansah acknowledged the efforts of the committee that compiled the national prospectus, which included representatives from the GES, Free SHS Secretariat, TVET Service, and input from the Conference of Heads of Government-Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS).

He appealed to heads of senior high schools to be considerate in the admission process, emphasizing that the national prospectus reduces the list to the barest minimum, making it more affordable for parents.
