Hon. Haruna Iddrisu Launches Italian-funded RISE Project to Combat Youth Unemployment

Accra, June 16, 2025 – The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has unveiled a significant step towards tackling youth unemployment in Ghana with the approval of the Revitalising Institutions for Scales Enhancement (RISE) project, funded by the Italian government with a grant of 5 million Euros. The initiative aims to boost Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country, focusing on creating job opportunities and nurturing entrepreneurial skills among the youth.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. Iddrisu expressed optimism that investing in TVET would play a pivotal role in reducing youth unemployment, which has long been a challenge in Ghana. He emphasized that empowering youth with the right technical skills will enable them to not only become employable but also to generate self-employment opportunities.

Rebranding TVET for Entrepreneurial Growth

In line with his vision, the Education Minister charged the Director-General of Ghana TVET, Eng. Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, to work closely with the Ministry’s Policy Planning Directorate to rebrand the TVET sector. Hon. Iddrisu stressed the importance of positioning TVET as a key driver for entrepreneurship rather than just a path for job seekers.

“We aim to produce entrepreneurs who can create their own jobs and not rely on the government,” the Minister emphasized. This initiative is expected to transform the perception of TVET institutions, encouraging youth to view vocational training as a gateway to entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

Beneficiaries and Implementation Plan

Hon. Iddrisu announced that the TVET training centre would be one of the primary beneficiaries of the 5 million Euro grant, which will be implemented by the Ministry through the Commission for TVET (CTVET). The funding will support the modernization of TVET facilities, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of training across the country.

Support from the TVET Council

The chairperson of the Commission for TVET, Mr. Sebastian Fred Deh, commended the Education Minister for his leadership and dedication to the sector. He assured the Minister that the council would continue to provide strategic guidance to ensure the successful implementation of the RISE project and the broader reform agenda for TVET in Ghana.
