Government to support universities in Ghana to train five PhD students starting in 2025. Haruna Iddrisu announces this initiative at the National Education Forum on March 13, 2025.

In a significant development for higher education in Ghana, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, announced that the government will provide financial support to universities to train a total of five PhD students starting from 2025. This groundbreaking initiative was revealed during the National Education Forum held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on March 13, 2025.

An Investment in Advanced Education and Research

In his address at the National Education Forum, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the quality of higher education and strengthening the country’s academic research framework. The support is aimed at universities across Ghana to help train five promising PhD students in various fields, with a strong focus on research and development.

“Education is the cornerstone of any developing nation, and higher education is a critical component in shaping the future of our country,” Iddrisu stated. “We recognize that by investing in advanced education and research, we are not only enhancing the capabilities of our universities but also contributing to the development of our country’s intellectual capital.”

PhD Training to Bridge Gaps in Higher Education

The initiative, which will begin in 2025, is intended to assist universities in developing specialized skills in PhD students who will, in turn, contribute to research projects, publications, and knowledge dissemination. This move is seen as an effort to close the skills gap in the higher education sector, while also encouraging the pursuit of doctoral studies in fields where expertise is urgently needed for national development.

Iddrisu underscored that the government’s focus is on ensuring that students who receive PhD training are equipped with the skills necessary to address the pressing challenges faced by Ghana and the African continent. “We want to ensure that our universities produce highly-skilled researchers and scholars who can help solve the critical issues facing our nation, from healthcare to agriculture, energy, and technology,” he explained.

Support for Local Universities

The government has already indicated that the funding support will be allocated to local universities, with the goal of increasing the number of locally trained PhD holders. This initiative aims to reduce the dependency on foreign-trained professionals while simultaneously enhancing the international standing of Ghanaian universities.

Additionally, Iddrisu called for universities to align their programs with national development priorities, ensuring that research projects are relevant to the country’s needs. He also mentioned that the government will work closely with the Ministry of Education to track the progress and success of this initiative, ensuring its long-term sustainability.

Enhancing Research Capacity

The move to support PhD training aligns with the broader vision of the government to improve the country’s research and development capacity. By encouraging more students to pursue PhD studies and offering them the necessary resources and funding, the government is positioning higher education as an engine for national growth.

“The training of PhD students will not only contribute to academic excellence but will also directly support innovation and economic growth. We want to create a research ecosystem that thrives on homegrown talent,” Iddrisu said.

National Education Forum

The announcement was made during the National Education Forum at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). The event, which brought together key education stakeholders, including government officials, educators, and students, discussed various issues affecting Ghana’s education sector. The forum aimed to find solutions to challenges within the educational system and promote sustainable development.

During the forum, Iddrisu reiterated the government’s commitment to education, calling for continuous dialogue among all stakeholders to enhance the quality of learning. He emphasized the importance of addressing educational disparities and improving the overall infrastructure in schools across the country.

Looking Ahead

With this new initiative, the government’s commitment to improving higher education in Ghana is clear. Training more PhD students will enhance academic research and knowledge production, making Ghana’s universities centers of excellence. Moreover, the government is hopeful that this move will encourage more students to pursue postgraduate studies, thus fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and innovation in the country.

The announcement by Haruna Iddrisu is a positive step in strengthening the foundation of Ghana’s educational system and boosting the nation’s research capacity. It signals a future where local expertise in academia and research will thrive, supporting the long-term economic and developmental goals of the country.
