Ferdinand | EducationGhana | February 19| GES Warns Heads of Schools Against illegal 2025 BECE Registration Fees
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong warning to school heads against imposing unauthorized BECE registration fees on final-year students, urging compliance to avoid sanctions.
GES Issues Strict Warning Against Unauthorized BECE Registration Fees
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of basic schools against charging illegal registration fees for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This directive comes amid reports on social media alleging that some school authorities were illegally demanding fees from students for BECE registration—an action that has sparked public concern and outrage.
In an official statement issued on February 12, 2025, the GES management made it clear that no basic school head has the authority to impose extra charges for BECE registration. The service has directed all Regional and District Directors of Education to monitor and enforce compliance.
📢 “Regional Directors are instructed to alert District Directors to monitor the situation and caution all Heads of Basic Schools. Any Head who has collected such unauthorised fees is required to refund the monies promptly. Failure to comply will result in sanctions.”

GES Orders Refund of Illegally Collected Fees
As part of its disciplinary measures, the GES has ordered all school heads who have already collected unauthorized BECE fees to immediately refund the money to affected students.
Authorities warn that failure to comply will attract strict sanctions, which may include:
✔ Suspension or dismissal of guilty school heads.
✔ Legal actions and fines for violations.
✔ Administrative sanctions from the GES and Ministry of Education.
This action reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring free and fair access to BECE registration as part of its broader efforts to improve basic education policies in Ghana.
Late Registration for BECE Will Not Be Allowed
The GES has also reminded heads of schools, students, and parents that late registration for BECE candidates will not be accepted.
🔹 All eligible students must be registered within the official WAEC registration window.
🔹 Any school found delaying registration processes may face penalties.
📢 GES urges all stakeholders to stay informed and comply with these regulations to ensure a smooth examination process.
Public Reactions and Stakeholder Engagement
The directive has received widespread attention, with many parents and students praising the GES for taking action against exploitative practices.
🎙 A concerned parent stated:
“We are already struggling with school expenses, and adding unnecessary fees for BECE registration is unfair. The GES should punish those responsible.”
📢 Teachers and school heads, however, argue that the government should ensure timely disbursement of exam fees to prevent financial challenges for schools.
🔎 Education analysts suggest that the GES should improve its monitoring mechanisms to prevent future occurrences of such illegal charges.
GES Reaffirms Commitment to Education Transparency
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reassured the public of its dedication to fairness and accountability in the education sector. Officials promise to closely monitor the situation to protect students from unjust financial demands.
📢 GES urges parents and students to report any cases of unauthorized BECE fees through official GES regional and district offices.
