GES Issues Strict Directive on 2025 BECE and WASSCE Registration
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a stern warning to all Heads of Basic and Senior High Schools—both public and private—to refrain from registering unqualified candidates for the upcoming 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This directive seeks to maintain the integrity of the registration process and ensure compliance with the established rules and regulations governing these critical examinations.
Eligibility for Registration
According to a letter signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, on behalf of the Director-General of GES, only students in their final year of study are eligible to register for these examinations. Specifically:
- BECE: Only JHS3 students are allowed to register.
- WASSCE: Only SHS3 students are permitted to register.
The GES has explicitly prohibited heads of schools from registering students in lower grades, such as JHS1/SHS1 and JHS2/SHS2, as this violates both GES and West African Examinations Council (WAEC) regulations.

Illegal Practices to Avoid
Heads of schools have also been cautioned against registering Form 3 students from other schools to sit for the BECE or WASSCE under their institution’s name. Such practices are deemed illegal and undermine the credibility of the examinations.
Compliance Measures and Sanctions
To enforce compliance with these directives, the GES has announced plans to conduct an audit of the registration process. This audit will verify that all registered candidates meet the eligibility criteria. The consequences for non-compliance include:
- Nullification of Registrations: WAEC will cancel the registration of any student found to have been registered illegally.
- Severe Sanctions: Offending school heads and individuals will face disciplinary actions, which could include dismissal or legal penalties. These sanctions are intended to serve as a deterrent to others.
Role of Regional and District Education Offices
The GES has tasked all Regional, Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to disseminate this directive to Heads of Schools and ensure strict adherence. Regular monitoring and reporting mechanisms will be put in place to ensure compliance.
Commitment to Integrity
This directive underscores the GES’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s educational system and ensuring a smooth registration process for the 2025 BECE and WASSCE. Stakeholders are urged to cooperate fully to uphold the standards of education and examination in the country.
