Disregard Teacher Unions’ ‘attack’ on proposal for reopening of Schools – ATAG to GES

The All Teachers Alliance Ghana (ATAG) has advised the Ghana Education Service (GES) to disregard a directive by the pre-tertiary teacher unions on the reopening of schools, and rather concentrate on a more efficient way of getting our school children back to the classroom.

”We write to bring to the notice of the entire teaching fraternity on the recent letter signed by four unions to the Director-General insisting that school should not be reopened is a form of intellectual dishonesty and lack of proper discernment of the situation.”

The Union in a press release issued on Monday, May 18, 2020, and signed by its General Secretary, Albert Dadson, the Union chastized the other Four Pre-tertiary Teacher Unions, GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT and TEWU for attacking the GES on a request to submit their views and suggestions on the prevention of COVID-19 in Schools should school resumes after COVID-19.

”All over the world, countries are beginning to ease the restrictions on social gathering and are ensuring that normal life comes to play as the coronavirus pandemic begins to reach its peak. Looking at the nature of our education system, continuous staying at home by many pre-tertiary school children poses not a danger to their academic life but also to the future of our education in this country.” The Union said.

”We are by this release called on the Director-General to disregard the directives by the pre-tertiary teacher unions and rather concentrate on a more efficient way of getting our school children back to the classroom.”

”The fear that has been expressed by the four unions is highly misplaced and could be borne out of lack of knowledge on how to tackle the situation. There is a serious gap this situation has created and the mess could be more cumbersome for teachers and all education actors if no efficient way comes to the table for discussion.” They said.

BECE and WASSCE

The ATAG said the BECE candidates need to know their fate whether they will have to be repeated in JHS 3 and not allowed to go to the senior high school this year

”First, the BECE candidates need to know their fate whether they will have to be repeated in JHS 3 and not allowed to go to the senior high school this year.”

”The WASSCE candidates are still waiting to know their fate whether the examination will be postponed for them to be repeated or not. Or they will be asked to go home and prepare from their various homes.” The Union argued.

The Union asked whether all school children due for promotion to the next stage had to be repeated automatically and be asked to remain in the same class.

”Basic schools had done almost two terms and repeating all children for them to redo their lessons could create a sheer psychological impact on many of them.”

”We urge the Director-General, to engage other stakeholders who equally matters, rather than the teacher unions who are bereft of ideas, to getting a more efficient way of getting our school children back to the classroom.”

”We also take this opportunity to urge Director-General and WAEC to as a matter of urgency find a better way of helping our brothers and sisters write their final exams and relieve them of the academic trauma.”

”The novel coronavirus had come to stay with us and there is nothing we can do than to find efficient ways and means to live with it without spreading fear. Besides, more headway had been made in terms of treatment of the virus than before and researchers are still working to find vaccines and cure.”

”Should schools be allowed to delay reopen, our education system will suffer a continuous disaster that could take decades to reverse.” They said.
