Ferdinand | EducationGhana | July 15 | CLOGSAG Joins TUC in Indefinite Strike Over SSNIT Stake Sale
CLOGSAG joins the TUC in an indefinite strike starting July 15, 2024, protesting SSNIT’s stake sale. Rock City Hotel withdraws bid amid controversy.
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has announced its participation in an indefinite strike action starting July 15, 2024.
This move aligns with the Trades Union Congress (TUC)’s directive, following the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval allowing SSNIT to proceed with the sale of part of its stake in certain facilities.
TUC’s Stance
The TUC, led by Secretary General Dr. Yaw Baah, declared the strike after expressing dissatisfaction with NPRA’s decision to permit SSNIT to continue the stake sale without further consultation.
The TUC’s directive requires all workers in Ghana to cease work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the sale process.
CLOGSAG’s Participation
In a press statement, Isaac Bampo Addo, the press secretary for CLOGSAG, confirmed the association’s commitment to the indefinite strike from July 15, 2024, supporting the broader organised labour movement’s demands.
Rock City Hotel Withdrawal
Amidst the controversy, Rock City Hotel, a bidder for the SSNIT stake, has retracted its bid. The hotel’s management cited the negative publicity and lack of adequate stakeholder engagement as reasons for their decision.
The statement emphasized that the negativity surrounding the deal could harm their brand and the investment’s success.

TUC’s Dr. Yaw Baah
“From Monday 15 of July 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels.”
Rock City Hotel Management
“Flowing from all the commentary monitored and the undue negativity that has attended this commentary, we feel you have not done enough to engage all your stakeholders, leading to perceptions that we don’t want to be associated with our brand.”
Next Steps
With the strike set to commence on July 15, 2024, the country faces potential widespread disruptions across various sectors.
The call for SSNIT to terminate the sale process remains the primary demand of the striking unions, highlighting the critical need for further dialogue and resolution.
