Ferdinand | EducationGhana | April 15| | University of Ghana and McGill University Renew Strategic 5‑Year Partnership to Boost Research and Exchange
The University of Ghana and McGill University, Canada, have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding for five years, expanding joint research, faculty and student exchanges, and the Nkabom collaborative project.
In a significant move to deepen international cooperation, the University of Ghana (UG) and McGill University, Canada, have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for an additional five years. The agreement was signed on April 18, 2025, by Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of UG, and Prof. Anja Geitmann, Vice-President (Global Engagement) of McGill University, at a brief ceremony on the UG campus.
Strengthening Joint Research and Publications
Under the renewed MoU, both universities commit to expanding collaborative research projects and co-authored publications across disciplines. Building on the success of the recently launched Nkabom Project, the partnership will facilitate interdisciplinary teams from both institutions to tackle global challenges—from public health and climate resilience to digital innovation and social policy.
Enhanced Faculty and Student Exchanges
The agreement reaffirms provisions for faculty secondments, visiting scholar programs, and graduate-level student exchanges. Prof. Amfo emphasized that these mobility opportunities will enrich academic environments on both sides, fostering cross-cultural learning and professional development. “We must engage the expertise needed to ensure both our communities benefit fully from this collaboration,” she remarked.
Academic Seminars and Capacity-Building Workshops
In addition to exchanges, the MoU outlines a calendar of joint academic seminars, workshops, and short courses designed to build capacity in emerging fields. Prof. Geitmann described the partnership as “powerful,” noting her pride in collaborating with one of Ghana’s most influential universities. These events will provide early-career researchers and graduate students with platforms to present their work and network with international peers.

As global challenges grow increasingly complex, the strengthened partnership between the University of Ghana and McGill University positions both institutions to leverage their collective expertise for academic excellence and societal impact.
