Shock Waves Across Ghana as WAEC Releases 2025 WASSCE Results: Major Decline in Core Subjects and Over 7,000 Results Cancelled”

WAEC has released the 2025 WASSCE provisional results, showing sharp drops in Mathematics and Social Studies, widespread examination irregularities and thousands of cancelled or withheld results. Full performance statistics and official details here.

WAEC Officially Releases 2025 Results for School Candidates

The West African Examinations Council has published the provisional results of the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates. A total of 461,736 candidates registered for the examination, consisting of 207,415 males and 254,321 females drawn from 1,021 schools. This represents a slight increase of 0.24 per cent over the entry figure for 2024.According to WAEC, login details have been sent to school heads to enable candidates to access their results. The Council has also warned candidates to disregard fraudsters who promise result upgrades for a fee, stressing that its verification system is fully secured.

Performance in Core Subjects: A Year of Sharp Declines

WAEC’s published tables reveal mixed performance across the four core subjects, with a concerning downturn in some areas compared with previous years.

English Language

A total of 289,673 candidates, representing 69.00 per cent, obtained Grades A1 to C6. This performance is slightly lower than the 69.52 per cent recorded in 2024.

Mathematics (Core)

The steepest decline occurred here. Only 48.73 per cent obtained Grades A1 to C6, a sharp drop from the 66.86 per cent recorded in 2024. The data shows that 114,872 candidates representing 26.77 percent failed the subject.

Integrated Science

Performance remained fairly stable, with 57.74 percent scoring A1 to C6. This is close to the 58.77 percent performance in 2024.

Social Studies

Social Studies recorded a major decline. Only 55.82 percent obtained A1 to C6, compared with 71.53 percent in 2024. A total of 122,449 candidates, representing 27.50 percent, failed the subject.WAEC notes in its summary that the four-year performance trend from 2022 to 2025 shows fluctuating outcomes that require national attention.

Examination Irregularities: Thousands of Results Affected Nationwide

The Ghana Examinations Committee has completed investigations into several irregularity cases reported during the exam period. The Council approved the following actions:

1. Cancellation of Subject Results

Results of 6,295 candidates were cancelled for bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks or printed sheets into examination halls.

2. Cancellation of Entire Results

Entire results of 653 candidates were cancelled after they were found with mobile phones during the exam.

3. Withheld Results Pending Further Probe

Subject results of 908 candidates and entire results of 158 candidates have been withheld for suspected offences and are still under investigation.In addition, 185 schools have had the results of some candidates withheld for alleged collusion. WAEC is working to conclude these investigations before the end of December 2025.

Teachers and Invigilators Implicated

WAEC also confirmed that 35 individuals, including 19 teachers, were found to have taken part in acts that compromised the integrity of the examination. The 19 teachers have been arraigned before court, receiving either fines or prison terms. The remaining 16 individuals are yet to be presented before the courts.WAEC says the names of implicated teachers will be forwarded to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service for further disciplinary action.

A National Call for Vigilance and Support

WAEC concluded its release by thanking the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, supervisors, invigilators and examiners for their support during the examination period.The Council described the 2025 examination cycle as challenging but successful, urging the nation to respond to the results with a commitment to strengthening teaching, supervision and integrity in schools.
