Former Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has petitioned the United Stated Embassy to as a matter of urgency institute a policy to prioritise Ghanaian student visa applicants before their US school admission deadline.

The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency appeal comes after some desperate Ghanaian students who risk missing their US admission deadlines called on him to consult the US Embassy for an early visa application.

“Without an urgent policy intervention from your good office, many Ghanaian students who have already paid fees and others with scholarships are on the cusp of losing a lifetime opportunity,” Ablakwa urged the Embassy in a post.

According to him, many of these Ghanaian students have put their closest available interview dates to a period their reporting deadline.

The Ranking Member, Committee on Foreign Affairs further urged Suvillan to just as US Embassy in Nigeria has a special dispensation of priority appointment for Nigerian student visa applicants also do the same for Ghanaians.

He said though Nigeria is the largest contributor of African Students to American Colleges and Universities Ghana with a 15.3% increase in students enrollment in the US during the 2019/20 academic year needs to be considered.

“It is in the best interest of our long-standing cordial bilateral relations for this appeal to receive a positive policy response even as I acknowledge the challenging pandemic circumstances under which consular officials are working,” he stated.
