KNUST Student Death: Police Recover Laptop and Mobile Phone as Investigation Deepens
Authorities investigating the tragic death of Joana Deladem Yabani, a fourth-year Biological Sciences student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), have made a major breakthrough in the case.
According to a statement released by the university’s Office of the Registrar on February 28, 2025, investigators have successfully recovered Joana’s laptop and mobile phone, which were found hidden behind the Flint Hostel on campus.
CCTV Footage Leads to Key Discovery
The retrieval of these items was made possible through CCTV footage from Flint Hostel’s security surveillance system. The Ghana Police Service has taken custody of the devices, which are expected to provide crucial digital evidence for the ongoing investigation and prosecution of the case.
Suspect Remanded as Investigation Continues
Meanwhile, 21-year-old final-year student Daniel Tuffuor, who was arrested in connection with the case, has appeared before the Prempeh District Court.
Prosecutors requested his remand into police custody to facilitate further investigations, and the court granted the request, setting his next court appearance for March 17, 2025.
KNUST Reaffirms Commitment to Campus Security
In its statement, KNUST management expressed appreciation to law enforcement officers for their swift action and reaffirmed its commitment to student safety.
“The University continues to prioritize the safety and security of its students and is taking further steps to enhance surveillance measures within and around campus,” the statement read.
Growing Concerns Over Campus Safety
Joana Deladem Yabani’s tragic death has sparked nationwide concerns over student security on university campuses. Many have called for stronger surveillance, stricter security policies, and improved safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The university has urged students, staff, and the general public to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their investigations. KNUST also expressed solidarity with Joana’s family and friends during this difficult period.
Looking Ahead
With the recovery of Joana’s electronic devices, authorities hope to gather more evidence that could be pivotal in bringing justice to the victim and her family. The case continues to develop, and further updates are expected as investigations proceed.
