The Ghana Teaching Council has recognized Madam Fuseina Fuseini of the Madina SDA Basic School in the Greater Accra Region as Ghana’s Most Outstanding Teacher for 2024. This prestigious accolade was awarded at the annual Ghana Teacher Prize Awards ceremony, coinciding with the global celebration of World Teachers Day, emphasizing the vital role educators play in shaping the educational landscape of the nation.

Recognition of Dedicated Educators

The ceremony was graced by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who represented President Akufo-Addo. In his address, Dr. Adutwum praised the unwavering dedication and commitment of teachers in Ghana towards the development of the nation through education. He noted, “Teachers are at the forefront of shaping the future of our country, and their hard work deserves to be celebrated.”

During his speech, Dr. Adutwum expressed concerns about the politicization of the government’s ‘double track’ system under the Free Senior High School (SHS) program. He explained, “If you eliminate double track the way they [politicians] have said it, Achimota cannot bring in new students. Parents must be educated on this.” He highlighted that the government has taken a scientific approach to address the challenges of the double track system, emphasizing the need for increased infrastructure in schools to maintain the quality of education for all students.

Addressing Student Indiscipline

The Education Minister also reacted to the growing reports of indiscipline among students in senior high schools. He issued a stern warning to students engaging in destructive behaviors, such as vandalizing school property after examinations. Dr. Adutwum asserted, “There should be no tolerance for indiscipline in our schools, and there will be zero tolerance for indiscipline in our schools.”

He outlined upcoming proposals aimed at tackling indiscipline, including the appointment of deans of discipline in schools. The Minister assured students that any disruptive behavior could jeopardize their academic future, stating, “If you go on a rampage and disrupt property, that ends your career.”

Awards and Achievements

The Ghana Teacher Prize Awards ceremony, held at the Kwame Nkrumah University, celebrated the invaluable contributions of educators to Ghana’s education system. This year’s theme, “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” underscored the significance of incorporating teacher input in educational policies and practices.

As part of her prize, Fuseina Fuseini received a prototype of a three-bedroom apartment worth 500,000 cedis, a full scholarship for further studies abroad, and a promotion out of turn. Expressing her gratitude and determination, Fuseina said, “Hard work has paid me. As a creative and innovative teacher, I am always ready to work, and I want to encourage other teachers across the country to put in their best, and I am sure one day God will reward them.”

In the Teacher in Leadership and Administration category, Rev. Sr. Victoria Jessey was awarded a saloon car, while the first and second runners-up received cash prizes. For the Non-Teaching Staff category, Mr. Wisdom Yaw Opoku also won a saloon car, with cash prizes presented to both first and second place winners.

Dr. William Kwabena Nantwi from Offinso College of Education was honored as the Best College of Education Tutor, receiving a 4×4 pick-up vehicle, along with cash prizes for the first and second place winners in that category.
