Haruna Iddrisu Directs Unannounced SHS Inspections After Kumasi Shooting, Introduces New GES Leadership

At Sunyani Technical University on 9 April 2025, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu met CHASS, ordered unannounced SHS inspections following the SDA Kumasi shooting, unveiled new GES executives, and addressed staffing and double‑track system challenges.

On 9 April 2025 at Sunyani Technical University, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu convened with the Conference of Heads of Government‑Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) to tackle urgent security and operational issues in Ghana’s SHSs.

Speaking in the wake of the SDA Senior High School shooting in Kumasi, the Minister announced full government backing for the Ghana Education Service (GES) to conduct regular, unannounced inspections—covering dormitories, classrooms, and perimeters—to prevent the entry of illegal weapons and contraband.

During the engagement, Hon. Iddrisu introduced the new GES leadership team: Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis as Acting Director‑General, alongside deputies Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi and Dr. Manawaru Issahaque. Their appointments, he noted, will bolster the Service’s capacity to implement enhanced safety protocols and drive educational reforms.

Beyond security, the Minister addressed systemic challenges affecting education delivery. He outlined plans to recruit and deploy additional non‑teaching personnel to support schools, reassess the double‑track system for better scheduling and infrastructure use, and settle unpaid financial obligations inherited from previous administrations. Emphasizing that education issues are treated as national emergencies, he called on CHASS members and all stakeholders to collaborate in strengthening Ghana’s education sector.

CHASS leaders raised concerns over resource shortages, external influences on school governance, and inconsistencies in sanctioning policies. GES management responded by committing to a transparent hearing process and ongoing dialogue to ensure fair outcomes and continuous improvement across all government‑assisted senior high schools.
