Ferdinand EducationGhana | December 07 |  GTEC Declares UG Certificates from Six Learning Centres Invalid for 2025/2026

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ruled that academic qualifications issued by six UG Learning Centres including Tamale are not recognised for employment, further education, or promotion. Prospective students urged to check accreditation status.

What GTEC’s Notice Says

On 3 December 2025, GTEC issued a public notice naming six learning centres of UG as “unaccredited.” These centres are located in Koforidua, Cape Coast, Tamale, Ho/Tsito, Wa and Sunyani. The Commission stated that all academic qualifications issued by UG via these centres will not be recognized for employment, further education, or promotion. Alongside the notice, GTEC directed that these centres must immediately cease fresh admissions, pending full accreditation.

Implications for Students, Graduates and Employers

  • Individuals who obtained certificates from these six learning centres may face difficulties when seeking employment, further studies, or professional advancement — as such credentials are deemed invalid by GTEC.
  • Prospective students should verify the accreditation status of any institution or learning centre before enrolment, to avoid wasting time and money. GTEC urges public to confirm accreditation directly with the Commission.
  • Employers, educational institutions, and other stakeholders should treat degrees from the flagged centres as non‑recognised until the institutions gain proper accreditation.

Response from the University of Ghana

According to reports, UG has suspended admissions into the six learning centres for the 2026/27 academic year, in compliance with GTEC’s directive. Continuing students, however, will be allowed to complete their programmes under a “teach‑out” arrangement. The institution said that certificates issued henceforth will originate from the main campus and not from the flagged centres.

What Next: Recommendations for Stakeholders

  • Prospective applicants should direct enquiries to GTEC and/or UG to confirm accreditation status before applying anywhere.
  • Graduates or certificate holders from the six centres may need to seek confirmation and clarification from UG on the status of their degree — especially if they intend to use it for employment or further studies.
  • Employers and admission officers should check credentials against GTEC’s public accreditation list, to avoid accepting non‑recognised certificates.
