The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that Cabinet has directed the reversal of all name changes made to public universities that were renamed after individuals under the previous administration.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, as the House reconvened, Mr Ayariga said the decision forms part of efforts by the Mahama administration to restore the historical and institutional identities of Ghana’s public universities.

“Mr Speaker, there has been a Cabinet directive to change the names of all the universities that were changed to individuals back to the names that they were given. A bill will be brought to this House to change and reverse all the changes of the names of the universities,” the Majority Leader announced.

The directive is expected to affect several institutions that were renamed during the Akufo-Addo-led government, including University of Energy and Natural Resources, the University for Development Studies, and others that were retitled in honour of political figures.

The proposed bill, when laid before Parliament, will seek to amend the relevant Acts establishing the affected universities to formally reinstate their original names.

Parliament is expected to consider the bill when it is presented in the coming weeks.
