Ghana’s Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announces a massive increase in GETFUND support to the Students Loan Trust Fund—from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million—to ease tertiary students’ financial burden under the No Fees Stress policy.

Big Boost for Student Loans in Ghana

At the official launch of the No Fees Stress Policy held at Koforidua SDA College of Education on July 4, 2025, Minister for Education Hon. Haruna Iddrisu revealed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) is set to more than double its allocation to the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF)—from GH¢70 million to GH¢150 million starting in the 2025/2026 academic year.

“Next year, the GETFUND will double its allocation to the Students Loan Trust from 70 million to 150 million to support students who may want to access it further,” Hon. Iddrisu declared.

This major investment is aligned with government efforts to improve equity, access, and retention at the tertiary level through innovative financial interventions.

Supporting the No Fees Stress Policy

This increase directly complements the No Fees Stress Policy, a flagship government initiative aimed at ensuring first-year tertiary students in public institutions can enroll without paying upfront academic fees.

Students will now be able to:

  • Register without fee-related delays
  • Access loan support faster through a more resourced SLTF
  • Pursue uninterrupted studies in colleges and universities nationwide

Scholarship Authority Bill Coming to Parliament

The Education Minister also used the occasion to announce the forthcoming presentation of the Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament, a significant reform measure aimed at addressing longstanding issues of nepotism and cronyism within the scholarship award system.

“I will next week, on your behalf and in honour of one of your campaign policies, lay before Parliament the Scholarship Authority Bill to deal with the nepotism and cronyism that was associated with the scholarship award scheme,” Hon. Iddrisu noted.

This bill is expected to bring transparency, fairness, and merit-based selection into Ghana’s scholarship landscape.

What This Means for Students

  • More funds available for student loans via SLTF
  • Faster disbursements with fewer rejections
  • Greater transparency in national scholarship schemes
  • A new era of meritocracy in tertiary education funding
