“The Wesley Girls’ SHS Parents Association has called for a review of the Free SHS policy, citing challenges like overcrowded dormitories and poor infrastructure. Learn more about their concerns and the push for policy change.”

Amid growing concerns over the challenges facing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy in Ghana, the Wesley Girls’ SHS Parents Association has taken a bold step by calling on the government to review the policy.

Concerns

During the school’s 2024 Speech and Prize Giving Day, members of the association highlighted several pressing issues that have arisen as a result of the policy’s implementation.

One of the major concerns raised by the Parents Association is the overcrowded dormitories in the school, which have forced students to sleep on the floor. Additionally, they pointed out the poor state of school infrastructure, exacerbated by the government’s failure to address the needs of schools adequately.

Restrictions 

Furthermore, restrictions placd on the Parents Association have hindered their ability to contribute to the development of the schools, particularly in areas such as infrastructural development. The head prefect and headmistress of Wesley Girls’ SHS expressed their worries about these challenges during the event, reflecting the widespread concern among stakeholders.

While the call for a review of the Free SHS policy has gained support from many well-meaning Ghanaians, there remains skepticism about the willingness of policymakers to address the issues raised. Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Education Committee, voiced doubts about the ruling party’s commitment to tackling the problems associated with the policy.

The Parents Association argues that the policy’s prohibition on parental financial contributions to school construction initiatives has worsened infrastructure challenges. They emphasized the importance of joint initiatives between the government, the Parents Association, and the local community to address these issues effectively.

NDC’s Narrative

In a political twist, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has advocated for a review of the Free SHS policy, while the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains opposed to the idea. Despite differing opinions, the urgent need to address the challenges facing the Free SHS policy is evident, and stakeholders are calling for meaningful dialogue and action to ensure the success of Ghana’s education system.
