Ferdinand EducationGhana |  December 19| WAEC Faces Financial Crisis: 2024 WASSCE Results Delayed Due to GHS118 Million Shortfall from Gov’t

The release of the 2024 WASSCE results has been delayed due to significant financial constraints faced by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Out of the GHS118 million required to finalize the result processing, the government has provided only GHS15 million, representing a mere 12.71% of the total debt.

Despite the partial payment, WAEC has announced that additional funding is critical to complete the remaining processes.

WAEC Appeals for Calm

John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, has assured candidates and parents that efforts are underway to resolve the financial issues.

“We urge everyone to remain calm. WAEC is committed to releasing the results as soon as possible, but we require further financial support to complete the process,” Mr. Kapi stated.

Impact of the Delay

The delay is not just a concern for students and parents but also for tertiary institutions. A reliable source has revealed that WAEC aims to release the results before Christmas to enable universities to finalize their admission processes for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Without the WASSCE results, it will be impossible for universities to admit first-year students and commence the academic calendar on schedule.

Calls for Reform

In light of WAEC’s financial challenges, Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has called for reforms to ensure sustainable funding for future examinations.

He proposed that:

  1. Exam Fee Responsibility Be Shifted to Parents: The cost of WASSCE exams could be borne by parents rather than the government.
  2. Free SHS Budget Allocation: The GHS400 allocated per student under the Free SHS program could support this initiative, ensuring WAEC receives timely and adequate funding.

Mr. Asare argued that this reform would prevent future delays and ensure WAEC remains adequately resourced.

The Road Ahead

As stakeholders await the release of the results, WAEC is expected to expedite the processing once the required funds are provided. The council has also assured that its staff is working tirelessly to minimize delays.

For now, candidates are advised to stay informed about updates from WAEC and prepare to access their results using valid result checker vouchers, which are expected to go on sale in the coming days.
