The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics of the School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in collaboration with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has hosted the Volta Fair Sports Development Forum 2025.
The forum took place on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the Kofi Anyidoho Auditorium of UHAS in Ho, bringing together policymakers, academics, sports administrators, industry leaders, and students to discuss the future of sports development in the Volta Region.

UHAS Reaffirms Commitment to Sports, Health, and Nutrition

In her welcome address, the Registrar of UHAS, Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, stated that the strength of every society is ultimately grounded in the health and resilience of its people. She explained that while talent may be innate, its development requires deliberate and sustained investment.
She noted that this philosophy underpins UHAS’s strong focus on sports, science, and nutrition as tools for national development, adding that the University remains committed to its vision of becoming a leading centre for research, training, and practical solutions.

Sports as an Engine for Economic Growth

The Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu, delivering a keynote address on the theme “Harnessing Healthy Regional Talent for Global Economic Growth and a Thriving 24-Hour Economy: A Discussion on Sports, Health and Nutrition,” described sports as more than recreation.
According to him, sports is a viable business sector that promotes youth development, health, national identity, and economic opportunity. He emphasised that countries that invest strategically in sports do so because of its proven ability to transform lives, unite communities, and create global brands from local talent.

Commitment to Regional Sports Infrastructure

Hon. Gunu expressed optimism that the forum would help create pathways and modern facilities that would enable athletes in the Volta Region to compete at the highest levels.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting sports in schools, improving recreational facilities in communities, and collaborating with stakeholders to develop modern sports infrastructure across the region.

Harnessing Talent in a Knowledge-Driven Economy

The Guest Speaker and Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, observed that the Volta Region is richly endowed with athletic talent that requires organisation, refinement, and strategic projection.
He stressed that talent alone is insufficient, noting that it must be nurtured, structured, and linked to opportunities, especially in a global economy increasingly driven by knowledge and talent.

Sports, Health, and Nutrition as a Strategic Industry

Mr. Armstrong-Mortagbe indicated that investing in health, nutrition, and sports is central to unlocking a multi-billion-dollar industry with the potential to attract investment, boost tourism, and strengthen global partnerships. He added that aligning sports development with health and nutrition would contribute directly to the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.

UHAS Announces Sports Health Monitoring Initiative

The Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Professor Samuel Essien-Baidoo, reiterated UHAS’s readiness to partner with stakeholders in areas such as nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, medical laboratory science, sports, and exercise medicine.
He announced that one of the key outcomes of the forum would be efforts towards establishing a Regional Sports Health Monitoring Unit at UHAS to support continuous athlete assessment and evidence-based sports health interventions.

Fireside Chat and Policy Roadmap

The forum concluded with a fireside chat on talent identification, scouting, grooming, and holistic athlete care. The session featured Mr. Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Professor Nii Korley Kortei, Dean of the UHAS School of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SSEM),
