President Mahama, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, and GES Director-General Prof Ernest Kofi Davis have launched the national STEM Box initiative to strengthen practical science education in basic schools across Ghana.

National Rollout of the STEM Box Initiative Begins

Ghana has taken a significant step toward strengthening practical science instruction with the official rollout of the STEM Box initiative for basic schools.

The national launch, held on Thursday, 4 December, brought together His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister for Education, Hon Haruna Iddrisu, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis.

The initiative places hands-on science toolkits in classrooms to help pupils explore key concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through guided activities and experiments.

A New Era of Practical Science Education

Speaking at the launch, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis commended the Government for prioritising practical learning as part of the basic school curriculum.

He described the STEM Box as a transformative classroom resource that gives pupils early access to real-world scientific exploration.

According to him, the programme is designed to stimulate curiosity and creativity while building essential skills for a world shaped by robotics, artificial intelligence, and rapid technological change. He noted that effective STEM instruction at the foundational level is critical for preparing young learners to pursue higher-level scientific and technical pathways.

Teacher Support at the Centre of Implementation

Prof Davis emphasised that the Ghana Education Service will provide teachers with structured training to ensure the proper use of the STEM Box in classrooms nationwide. District and regional units will supervise implementation, focusing on instructional quality and learner engagement.

The Director-General explained that practical science must become a routine part of weekly teaching to strengthen problem-solving, observation, inquiry, and experimentation among pupils.

A Call for Community Support

GES expressed appreciation to all partners contributing to the development and distribution of the STEM Box.

The Service also encouraged school leaders, teachers, parents, and communities to support the rollout as part of a shared national responsibility.

The Ministry of Education views the initiative as a long-term investment in Ghana’s scientific and technological future, providing every child with the opportunity to develop strong foundational skills.
