For the first time in the history of the prestigious EDUCOM Awards, a public basic school headteacher has been recognized as the School Leader of the Year. Mr. William Dortso, the headteacher of AVE MARIA Anglican Basic School in Osae Krodua, Awutu Senya West District, Central Region, received this honor at the 2024 EDUCOM Awards.

Mr. Dortso’s journey to this achievement is nothing short of inspiring. Appointed as the headteacher of the Ave Maria Anglican Basic School in September 2017, he was tasked with turning around the fortunes of a school that had faced numerous challenges, including a high turnover of headteachers and deteriorating infrastructure. His appointment came with clear instructions from the then District Director of Education, Madam Belinda, to bring positive change to the school and the surrounding community.

Achievements Under His Leadership

Through resilience, collaboration, and innovation, Mr. Dortso has transformed the Ave Maria Anglican Basic School into a beacon of hope and progress:

Academic Excellence:

In 2018, under his leadership, the school achieved its first-ever 100% pass rate in the BECE examination.

 

Infrastructure Development:

    • Renovated an old building to establish a Kindergarten (KG).
    • Secured school feeding services and built a kitchen to support the program.
    • Purchased three desktop computers and wired the JHS office for a computer lab.
    • Collaborated with the Parents Association to manufacture paint and renovate the JHS block, which had not seen any improvements since its establishment in 1994.

 

Security and Furniture:

    • Installed burglar-proof systems on eight doors at the JHS and 48 windows at the primary level.
    • Procured 37 desks for the primary school in collaboration with the Parents Association.

 

Community Projects:

    • Initiated a mechanized water project to serve both the school and the community.
    • Started painting the primary school block and constructing a store for the school feeding kitchen.

 

Signage:

Erected the first signpost for the school to enhance its visibility.

Leadership Roles

Mr. Dortso’s commitment to education and community extends beyond his school. He currently holds several positions, including:

  • Vice Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in Awutu Senya District.
  • Secretary to Jei Krodua Circuit COHBS.
  • Chairman of the Archdiocese of Accra Catholic Ewe Choirs Association (ACCECA).
  • Founder and Director of St. Michael Ewe Choir in Englishie Amanfro, Accra.

Speaking about his award, Mr. Dortso expressed gratitude, stating that his work was recognized due to the tangible improvements he brought to his school and community.
