Professor Lydia Aziato has become Ghana’s first nurse Full Professor, marking a historic milestone for nursing education and academic leadership in the country.  


Professor Lydia Aziato, widely known in the nursing and midwifery fraternity as Prof. 1, has made history as the first nurse to attain the rank of Full Professor in Ghana.  


Her promotion was approved by the University of Ghana Council on December 23, 2021, following her appointment as an Associate Professor in September 2017, and it represents a major breakthrough for nursing scholarship in Ghana.


Early Education and Nursing Training

Professor Lydia Aziato attended Ghana Senior High School, Koforidua, from 1985 to 1992. She later trained as a professional general nurse at the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, graduating in 1997.


  She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Psychology in 2001 from the University of Ghana, where she graduated with the highest CGPA in her class, an early indicator of her academic excellence.


Advanced Studies and International Exposure

She earned an MPhil in Nursing in 2005, also from the University of Ghana, with sponsorship from Unilever Ghana Limited during her postgraduate studies.


  Professor Aziato later undertook specialist training in Oncology Nursing at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Canada, completing the programme in 2006.  


Doctoral Research and Scholarly Contribution

In 2013, she completed a PhD in Nursing at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa, where her research focused on post-operative pain management.     Her doctoral work led to the development of a clinical guideline for post-operative pain management tailored to resource-limited clinical settings, contributing directly to improved nursing practice.


Academic Career Progression

Professor Aziato began her professional career as a Staff Nurse at Mamprobi Polyclinic before joining the University of Ghana in 2001.


  She rose steadily through the academic ranks, serving as Senior Nurse Technician, Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and ultimately attaining the rank of Professor in 2020.  


Vice-Chancellor of UHAS

Since 2022, Professor Lydia Aziato has served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, becoming one of the few nurses in Africa to lead a public university.     Her leadership continues to inspire a new generation of nurses, midwives, and health professionals across Ghana and beyond.


A Historic Milestone for Nursing in Ghana

Professor Lydia Aziato’s achievement marks a defining moment for nursing education in Ghana, affirming that nursing scholarship holds equal standing within the academic community.
