President John Dramani Mahama is expected to open GNAT’s 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference in Accra on January 5, 2026, as teacher leaders reflect on GES@50 and the future of education in Ghana.

President Mahama to Lead National Education Conversation

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to formally open the 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Accra on Monday, January 5, 2026, setting the tone for a nationwide dialogue on the state and future of education in Ghana.

The conference also doubles as GNAT’s 54th National Delegates Conference and comes at a time when the education sector is under mounting pressure to improve learning outcomes, teacher welfare, and system efficiency amid ongoing reforms.

Conference Held as GES Marks 50 Years

The conference is being organised against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of the Ghana Education Service (GES), established in 1974, a milestone that has renewed debate on the performance, relevance, and sustainability of Ghana’s education system.

It is being held under the theme: “Education and Development: The GES @ 50 – Reflecting, Reviewing, Revising and Growing the Profession and the Unions.” The theme is expected to guide critical reflections on five decades of public pre-tertiary education delivery while also shaping proposals for the next phase of reforms.

Focus on Teacher Welfare, Policy, and Union Relevance

Discussions at the conference are expected to focus on:

  • The overall performance of Ghana’s education system
  • Teacher welfare, conditions of service, and motivation
  • Professional development and career progression
  • The evolving role of teacher unions in education policy formulation

Education analysts say the outcomes of the conference could significantly influence future government decisions on education financing, workforce management, and stakeholder engagement.

Key National Figures to Grace the Event

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, will serve as Special Guest of Honour, underscoring government’s renewed engagement with teacher unions and education stakeholders.

Veteran statesman Opanin Kwame Pianim will chair the conference, while the keynote address will be delivered by Prof. George K. T. Oduro, Technical Adviser to the Ministry of Education and a respected education policy expert.

GNAT Leadership to Drive Policy Deliberations

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas T. Musah, will lead the policy and administrative sessions of the conference.

Earlier this year, during a courtesy call on President Mahama, Musah formally invited the President and expressed confidence in the new administration’s commitment to improving teacher welfare and strengthening the education system.

GNAT officials say the conference will also review the union’s internal governance, strategic direction, and advocacy priorities.

Conference Dates and Venue

The conference runs from December 30, 2025, to January 8, 2026, at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Sessions are scheduled to begin daily at 9:00 a.m., with participation from teacher leaders across all regions of Ghana.

Outcomes Expected After the Conference

At the end of the conference, GNAT is expected to:

  • Announce clear positions on key education reforms
  • Set new priorities for teacher welfare and professional growth
  • Reaffirm the union’s role in shaping national education policy

The resolutions are likely to influence negotiations with government and engagement with development partners in the coming years.

Education Sector Under Intense Review

The conference comes at a critical period for Ghana’s education sector. In February 2025, the government held a National Education Forum in Ho, where stakeholders examined strategies for transforming education for a sustainable future.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has since engaged institutions such as UNICEF, the World Bank, and university leadership to strengthen partnerships supporting ongoing reforms.
